The fall sports season has officially come to a close and Middlesex athletes are trading in their cleats for skates, field hockey sticks for squash rackets and soccer balls for basketballs. Although the winter brings another exciting and competitive atmosphere to the campus, there is always a period of adjustment that comes with the changing of sports seasons. On Tuesday, November 29 the Middlesex community gathered in the theater to honor and reflect upon the tremendous accomplishments of the fall athletes.
Teams across all levels, boys’ and girls’ experienced a great deal of success on the playing fields this fall. For the second year in a row, the boys’ varsity soccer team earned a position in the NEPSAC tournament. They played a
heroic match against soccer powerhouse South Kent in the quarterfinals where they lost 2-3 in overtime. The boys’ JV soccer squad ended their campaign with a 9-2-2 record, making it one of their most successful seasons in the past ten years. The varsity football team finished 5-3 and captured the infamous
St. George’s Cup by defeating the Dragons by a definitive 14 points. On the trails, the boys’ cross-country team won the division three
NEPSTA championship title as well as placed second at the
ISL’s. They completed their regular season having only suffered one loss to St. Mark’s.
On the girls’ side, the varsity field hockey team made their 15th straight appearance in the NEPSAC tournament. They earned a spot in the championship but ultimately lost a tough game to defending Class B champions, Thayer. The JV field hockey team had another banner fall as well; they finished their regular season 11-2-1. On the soccer field, the girls’ JV team went 10-1-1; it is the second year in a row they have only dropped one game. On St. George’s Day, the girls’ varsity soccer team honored their beloved coach
Paul Harrison for his 32 years of dedicated service to Middlesex athletics. Next year he will be stepping down as the head of the girls’ program but will undoubtedly continue to maintain a close presence on the athletic fields. Finally, girls’ varsity cross-country captured their 18th
straight NEPSTA championship title and finished their regular season undefeated.
