The weather was perfect for the 106th meeting of the Middlesex-St. George’s football rivalry. To the victor goes the privilege of adding another silver football to the trophy case and possession of the Middlesex-St. George’s Bowl for the coming year. On a more personal note, the MX seniors playing in their last Middlesex football game wanted to end their high school careers with a win and finish the 2011 campaign with a 5-3 record.
The MX 11 jumped out to a fast start when Captain Bryson ’12 returned the opening kick-off 60 yds., to the St. George’s 30 yd. line. From there the running game took over with Captain Devin ’12 completing the scoring drive with a 6 yd. touchdown. Sam ’12 added the point after for a 7-0 lead. Still in the first quarter, MX added a second touchdown when QB Nick ’13 found Bryson in the end zone for a 17 yd. touchdown catch, Sam's kick made the score 14-0.
The defensive unit, (John ’12, Alex ’12, Nathan ’12, and Dan on the defensive line, linebackers-Michael ’12, Chris ’12, Rob Z ’13 and Sam ’12, Bryson ’12, Nick ’13, Hasani ’14, Will ’13, and Andrew in the secondary) which has been the heart and soul of the team all season, continually stopped the St. George’s offense from getting any kind of drive started.
The offensive unit was also in full gear throughout the first half as the MX 11 scored twice more, FB Michael ’12 scoring both touchdowns on runs of 2 yds. and 7 yds. With Sam’s extra point,s the score went to 28-0 at halftime.
The offense unit which scored 115 points during the season included: Bryson , Alex , Nathan , Robert ’14, David ’12, Chris , Sam , Nick, Michael , Devin , Hasani , and Nick.
The third quarter was back and forth with neither team scoring and in the fourth quarter St. George’s offense caught life and scored twice but it was too late to change the outcome as Middlesex won 28-14.
The seniors had accomplished both their goals for the day, a win in their final game and a record of 5-3.
