Boys' Soccer Falls to South Kent in Overtime

11/17/2011 10:37:00 AM

Middlesex gave South Kent all that they could handle for 90 minutes, as the score read 2-2 at the end of regulation time. South Kent scored a controversial golden goal in overtime and Middlesex left the field with their heads held high and earning the respect of the South Kent crowd.

After going down 1-0 in the first five minutes on a disappointing goal and allowing a second 30 minutes into the first half, Middlesex came back to score with ten minutes left in the half. Junior Phil '13 picked the ball up in the left channel and beat two South Kent defenders on the dribble before curling a back post ball with his left foot that was buried one time into the far corner by John Henry.

With the halftime score at 2-1, Middlesex had a golden chance to score just three minutes after the restart of the half when Phil '13 found himself with the ball on his foot in space on the back post. His near post shot just missed knotting the score.

Then just twelve minutes into the second half Middlesex equalized through Peter. Haden played a set piece into the head of Blair  who nodded the ball to Phil  and then to Peter who cut the bouncing ball back across the centerback and struck a side foot curler from the left side that struck the inside of the right post and flew back into the left side panel for the goal.

The final half hour was intense and entertaining, as Middlesex had solid chances to win in regulation. Senior captain centerback Tyson was missed in the middle of the back and centerback Blair had to come off late in the match after an elbow to the head left him unable to continue. Senior Toby worked his socks off in the middle of the park and Anders was fantastic in anchoring the backline.

Despite the golden goal in overtime, the result of a scrum at the top of the box, the Middlesex team finished the season knowing that they were as good as any team on the day.
